Metallacyclopentadienes are an important class of five-membered metallacycles which are widely used in organic synthesis and organometallic chemistry. Meanwhile, metalloaromatics are a fascinating class of aromatic compounds, which have attracted great attention both experimentally and theoretically. Therefore, the synthesis and structural characterization of metallacyclopentadienes and metalloaromatics are very important topics in chemical science, especially in synthetic chemistry, organometallics, and the chemistry of aromatics.

However, although many metals in the Periodic Table have been reported to form their corresponding metallacyclopentadienes and metalloaromatics, non of metallacyclopentadienes  of indium (indacyclopentadienes) have been structurally characterized. Meanwhile, except one recent report on indabenzene formation in the literature, no other type of metalloaromatics of indium has been reported. In this work, by the reaction between our dilithio reagents with InCl3, we realized the first synthesis and structural analysis of a series of metallacycles of indium, including indacyclopentadienes, spiro indacyclopentadienes, aromatic indacyclopentadienyl dianions with an In-Li bond, and aromatic indacyclopentadienyl dianions with an In-In bond.
